Welcome to The Tweed Special School
For those of you who do not know about The Tweed, we are a new special school in Berwick upon Tweed opened in September 2024 which caters for pupils who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties, including associated challenging behaviours. Many of the pupils that attend the school have additional special educational needs such as autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit and hyperactive disorders (ADHD) and speech, language and communication difficulties.
Places for pupils are commissioned at the school by the local authority Northumberland County Council. All pupils who are referred to the school have an education, health and care plan.
The Tweed has been commissioned as part of the restructure of Berwick Educational partnership into a 2-tier structure, providing a local specialist provision for children in North Northumberland. The school will have an initial capacity of 30 places for children aged 3-11.
The Tweed is part of Berwick St Mary's Primary School, enabling a flexible and inclusive strategy designed to provide pupils with access to a fully bespoke curriculum and pastoral offer, that will tailored to meet their needs whilst providing opportunities to thrive in mainstream and specialist provisions.
Staff at The Tweed are confident and skilled in building positive relationships that help to break down barriers, build self-esteem and challenge disaffection. Teachers and support staff at The Tweed are highly trained to meet the needs of individual pupils.
Many of the pupils that attend The Tweed have not had success in their education elsewhere. Through their attendance at the Tweed, these pupils rebuild their trust and desire to learn. Our pupils achieve exceptionally well academically, from often lower-than-expected starting points. They leave school at Year 6 ready for their next stage of education through robust transition plans.
We are extremely proud of our Tweed community and our journey to provide a new resource for some of the most vulnerable pupils in our area.We know our website provides only a glimpse into the range of our provision, culture, activities and the fun that our pupils and staff enjoy as they learn. Please contact the school if you would like to know more.
